Crop Infection

What is a Crop infection ?

A crop infection is due to yeast called Candida as well as bacteria in the crop. 

What causes Crop infections?

  • Contact with human saliva and eating food out of humans' mouths. 
  • Eating rancid food 
  • Eating over ripe fruit and veggies. 

What are the symptoms of a crop infection?

  • Bruising 
  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia (not eating)
  • Weakness
  • Swollen crop
  • Open mouth breathing
  • Diarrhea

 How can owners prevent it ?

  • Do not let birds eat out of your mouth
  • Make sure the food is fresh 
  • Replace food and veggies a minimum of twice per day
  • Make fresh baby porridge every time before feedings

If your pet shows any of the above signs please take them to the nearest Exotic savvy vet, as this can cause crop stasis and be deadly.
